I am writing this message with my new baby girl beside me, sleeping soundly as I reflect on this upcoming Mother’s Day. It will be my first as a mother.

When I look at my daughter, I think about the values I hope to give to her, the values passed down to me by my own mother— how to be generous and kind, the importance of caring for the vulnerable and honoring and learning from the wisdom of those who have come before us.

As Mother’s Day approaches, I wonder, how can we best honor the women—mothers, sisters, best friends—who have taught us so well?

I recently had the privilege of reflecting on the importance of these principles with my dear friend, Deborah, as she approached the upcoming anniversary of the death of her mother, Emalyn. While Emalyn’s mind had stayed sharp until the end, her body finally gave out five years ago. She was fortunate to be able to die in her home, cared for by a loving daughter with the support of a wonderful hospice team.

Still, a loss of this depth is disorienting. As Deborah said so poignantly,

“My mother was way more of an anchor in my life than I realized.”

Many of us can relate to this sentiment, having someone in our lives who taught us right from wrong, who anchors us to our most dearly held values. For Deborah, making a gift to help provide hospice for another family in need was the perfect way to honor the woman who taught her the meaning of compassion.

It was my mother who taught me how the warmth of community can fight the loneliness and isolation so prevalent in our world today. As a member of the Housecall Providers Board of Directors, I witness these values lived out on a daily basis by the staff, volunteers and supporters who make up this great team.

This Mother’s Day, please join me in honoring someone dear to you with a contribution to Housecall Providers, so that they can continue to care for those most important to us.

With deepest thanks,

AnnetteSIGNATURE
