Each year, The Standard’s Volunteer Expo brings nonprofits together in one place to help Oregonians discover service and donation opportunities that fit their skills and interests.

While it’s true that I attend several similarly structured events in any given year, there’s something special about this one. Perhaps it’s the size (more than 100 organizations participated this year), or the setting – right in the heart of Portland. Whatever it is, the Volunteer Expo has become a kind of an institution. A part of the life of our community.

Thinking about the decade or more I’ve been attending, my mind conjures the faces of all of the volunteers we met first at the Volunteer Expo. Some of the best we’ve had. In the time since the most recent one, I’ve already had personal interviews with two new volunteers and have several more in process – all of whom first introduced themselves to me there at our table.

Events like these don’t happen on their own. It clearly takes a lot of work to pull an event of this scale together. In doing so, the folks at The Standard truly demonstrate their commitment to our community.

If you missed this year’s expo but are still interested in learning about volunteering with Housecall Providers, please reach out to me at tlawrence@housecallproviders.org or 971-202-5515.

Sincerely,
